In the Age of the 2-Million-Follower DJ, Authenticity is an Expensive Habit.

WeLove Perth Event Organiser Interview with Partyline Collective and their Insiiide series.

We sat down with Amma from WeLove Perth to talk about the “sadness” of the influencer era, the pressure to adapt, and her dream of a dancefloor where nobody checks their phone.

Let’s be honest: The easiest way to pack a club in Perth right now isn’t to book a selector who has spent 15 years mastering their craft. It’s to book a TikTok sensation with a viral snippet and a “Jesus pose” that looks great on a vertical screen.

For the punters who actually care about the music—the ones who know the difference between a pre-recorded set and a live journey—the “Influencer DJ” era is exhausting.

But for a promoter, it’s an existential crisis. Do you feed the algorithm, or do you feed the culture?

Enter Amma (Javiera Villatoro). Taking over the reins of WeLove Perth a year ago, she walked straight into a scene that is shifting rapidly from listening to content creation.

Ahead of this Friday’s massive collaboration with Dark Under featuring Maksim Dark, we sat down with Amma to get the raw truth about running an underground brand in a city that can often feel like it’s trading soul for stats.

The “Sadness” of the Scroll

When we asked Amma about the current state of the scene, she didn’t offer a PR-friendly soundbite. She went straight to the heart of the problem: the phone.

“What feels sad to me about this whole situation is that people are no longer moving for the music,” Amma says.

It’s a sentiment that echoes in smoking areas across Northbridge. When the crowd is static, staring at screens rather than losing themselves in the sound, the energy dies. Amma sees it firsthand from the DJ booth.

“They go just to see these DJs, and all they do is hold up their phones to make stories — ‘look, I’m here with the guy who has 2 million followers.’ That’s how it feels from my personal point of view.”

The Financial Risk of Quality

While WeLove is known for its underground Techno roots, Amma hasn’t played it safe. Her decision to introduce a Psytrance edition was a massive gamble for a brand known for Techno.

“I was nervous at first because psytrance is an outdoor genre,” she admits. “I thought, ‘People know WeLove for techno… maybe it’s not a good idea to drift so far from our usual style.'”

But the biggest risk wasn’t just the genre.. it was the budget. In an economy where most promoters are cutting costs to survive, Amma did the opposite. She wasn’t satisfied with the venue’s in-house rig, so she dug into her own pocket to upgrade the audio.

“I was investing a lot of money,” she reveals. “I rented an entire sound system because I didn’t like the venue’s one — and I’m very picky with sound.”

It was a financial tightrope walk. “It was a lot of work, a lot invested, and you never really know how a party is going to go until the very end.”

The tension backstage was palpable. “One of the DJs told me, ‘I’m scared to play for nobody.'”

But quality wins. By 11:00 PM, the place was so full the venue had to crack open a second bar just to handle the crowd. “When his set started, the venue was packed. That made me so happy — all the effort was worth it.”

Adapt or Die?

This creates a brutal dilemma. As a promoter, you can hate the “content farm” culture, but you still have bills to pay and venues demanding door numbers. Can you afford to be an idealist in this economy?

Amma is refreshingly honest about the compromise required to survive in 2026.

“Unfortunately, we can’t completely go against this trend,” she admits. “You either adapt, or you don’t grow.”

It is a stark reality check. The “Influencer DJ” isn’t going away, and ignoring the way the new generation consumes music is financial suicide. But acknowledging the trend doesn’t mean surrendering to it.

The WeLove Dream

So, what is the endgame? For Amma, the goal isn’t just to sell tickets.. it’s to reverse the programming. She wants to build a brand so trusted that the “Influencer” becomes irrelevant.

“My dream is to grow so much that one day the community who follows me is so organic and connected that they won’t even need to check the lineup, or their phones, during the party.”

It’s a bold vision: a return to the trust-based rave culture where you show up because you know the vibe is guaranteed, not because you need to tag a celebrity DJ in your story.

Walking the Walk

This Friday, WeLove is putting that philosophy to the test.

They aren’t bringing a viral TikTok star to sell out the room. They are bringing Maksim Dark, a Russian minimal techno producer with 15 years of releases on Senso Sounds, who plays exclusively Live sets of his own music.

It’s a booking for the heads. It’s a booking for the culture. And in a city of influencers, it’s exactly the kind of risk we should be supporting.

🔄 THE PARTYLINE PASS THE AUX

Every edition, we ask our guest to answer a question from the previous promoter, and leave a question for the next one.

FROM FVDED EVENTS: “What’s one risk you’ve taken that totally paid off — or didn’t?”

AMMA: “Booking an international DJ on the same date as another BIG, super-famous DJ with 2 million followers. It hasn’t happened yet — we’ll see how it goes 😮‍💨 But as always, we’re already learning so much from the process. In my opinion, life is about that… so let’s keep learning. Organising events is already a high-risk game on its own.”

AMMA’S QUESTION FOR THE NEXT GUEST: “How do you deal when your passion becomes a business? How do you manage that feeling when numbers start becoming so important, but your passion goes beyond that?”
