Industry Insiiide: Restless Australia… “Participation Over Everything”

INSIIIDE Restless. Interview with Zac / Whyze - Head owl at Restless Australia. PartyLine Collective Feature

Why this promoter ignores DM mixes, fights to keep events free, and believes the best networking happens on the dancefloor, not Instagram.

For Zac (aka WHYZE), the name “Restless” wasn’t just a brand—it was a feeling. Born out of the frustration of lockdowns and a stalled scene, Restless Australia launched in 2021 with a simple goal: get back to the music.

Now, having pivoted from monthly shows to a weekly residency, Restless has become a staple of the Perth Sunday session. Hosting “Restless Sundays” at Sir Henry’s in Northbridge, they offer a sanctuary for Underground House, Minimal, and Deep Tech lovers.

But their approach is unorthodox. They don’t sell tickets. They don’t hire DJs based on Instagram clout. And they barely break even.

We sat down with Zac to talk about the struggle of the “Free Entry” model, why he prefers Analog sound, and his controversial stance on how new DJs should pitch themselves.

🤝 Participation Over Everything

In an era of copy-paste DM blasts, Restless has a strict philosophy: Show up.

“Our core philosophy is always participation over everything,” Zac explains. “Our best bookings are always the DJs who have actually been to our events prior… 95% of our bookings are done at the events.”

His advice to aspiring DJs is simple: Step away from the keyboard and get on the dancefloor. “Simply going to an event and introducing yourself as a DJ is really all it takes to stand out.”

💸 The “Free Entry” Hustle

Restless Sundays operates on a model that most promoters would call crazy: Free entry, every week.

“We don’t sell any tickets and therefore barely break even on 70-80% of our nights,” Zac admits.

So why do it? “It’s important that our community is able to access our parties at will.”

To make it work, they’ve had to craft “elaborate schemes” to keep the door price at $0, ensuring that money is never a barrier for their community to connect.

📉 “Insta DJs” vs. Real DJs

Zac didn’t hold back when asked about the current state of the scene. He believes too many newcomers are prioritizing content over craft.

“Social media is making it too easy… I see a lot of DJs more focused on the clips they’re trying to get for their Insta than the dancers in front of them, and it’s heartbreaking.”

For Restless, the magic isn’t in the reel, it’s in the room. This focus on authenticity extends to their gear, too. They run an Allen & Heath mixer for their Sunday sessions, preferring the separation and warmth of Analog mixing over the convenience of digital features.

🔮 The Future: Sundays & Sir Henry’s

While they are closing the chapter on their Friday night concept (“WHYZE + Friends”), the focus is now entirely on building the Sunday culture at Sir Henry’s.

“It’s hidden out the back in our own little beer garden… only the bass gives it away from the street,” says Zac. “You really get a nice secluded vibe.”

The Final Dance: WHYZE + Friends While the core of the brand is now settled into Restless Sundays at Sir Henry’s, Zac is preparing for a bittersweet milestone this week.

“We are bringing our Friday event, WHYZE + Friends, to a close with the final event this Friday (Jan 30),” he says. The project was designed to filter newcomers in a commercial club setting into the deeper sounds of the underground.

“The lesson I took from it is that the gap is not as far as I thought in some ways, but significantly further than I thought in others.”

Catch the final WHYZE + Friends this Friday, Jan 30, at Metropolis Fremantle (Upstairs).
