Track of the Week: TRMV… From the Broome Bush to Perth Warehouses

He’s spent 16 years living in the North West, runs on iced coffee, and thinks pop-techno remixes are turning the scene into a “joke.” Meet TRMV.
For the last 16 years, Todd Vasilis (aka TRMV) has called Broome home. But every summer since 2020, he makes the pilgrimage down to Perth with one goal: to trade the bush doofs for concrete warehouses.
“In Broome, we aren’t able to access warehouses, so a lot of events are in the bush where everyone is spread out at their camps,” Todd explains. “In the warehouse, everything is more condensed… everyone is together partying. The vibes and energy of the people down here are just amazing.”
Starting his journey in Psytrance, Todd has since pivoted to a heavier, darker sound—Hard Techno and Hard Bounce—channeling the early Hardstyle influences of his youth in Sydney.
His latest track, “What Beat (TRMV’s Glass Pipe Rework),” claims our Track of the Week. It’s a gritty, vocoder-driven stomper that perfectly encapsulates his “Renegade Sound System” energy.
We caught up with TRMV to talk about the shift from Psy to Techno, why he prefers locals over Eastern Staters, and his controversial take on the current state of the scene.

🔊 The Shift: Psytrance to Hard Bounce
TRMV’s sound is described as “3 AM at a warehouse rave,” but his roots are surprisingly colorful.
“I started as a psytrance DJ,” he says. “But I moved into hard techno and hard bounce as it resonated a lot more with the early hardstyle I grew up with in Sydney.”
Now, he hunts for “darker, more melancholic” sounds, often scouring SoundCloud for free downloads from unknown artists or getting unreleased weaponery sent over from friends in Europe.

📉 The “Pop Techno” Problem
When asked about trends, TRMV didn’t hold back. While he’s loving the resurgence of Schranz and 90s Trance, he has zero patience for the commercialization of the genre.
“Hard techno remixes of pop songs need to disappear,” he states. “The people producing them and playing them are turning our scene from a raw underground into the joke of the electronic music scene.”
For TRMV, the culture is about authenticity, not viral TikTok clips.
🏗️ Support Your Locals
Todd is a strong advocate for WA talent. His dream is to organize a massive Hard Techno event at Metro City… but with a twist.
“I’d fill the slots with local underground Hard Techno DJs,” he says. “I see a lot of groups filling the smaller slots with DJs from the Eastern States, even though we have some amazing DJs right here.”
He shouts out locals D-Singh, NAAES, and Erusama as underrated heavyweights who deserve more mainstage attention.

💣 The Track: What Beat
The winning track, a rework of “What Beat,” showcases Todd’s production evolution. Moving away from standard structures, he experimented with Ableton’s vocoder to create unique textures.
“Usually I’m not a fan of making breakdowns,” he admits. “But I managed to get through it due to the vocal sample… making one of the leads out of a vocal chop and the vocoder.”
